The American scientist Salmon, for whom they are named, discovered the Salmonella species more than a century ago. They are widely acknowledged as a frequent cause of childhood infections, particularly typhoid (enteric) fever, bacteremia, and gastroenteritis. Typhoid fever, an illness that is most prevalent in developing nations, is caused by Salmonella serotypes Typhi and Paratyphi A, B, and C (also known as typhoidal Salmonella). According to the World Health Organization (WHO), between 16 and 33 million cases of typhoid fever occur annually worldwide, resulting in between 500,000 and 600,000 deaths. It is estimated that between 200 and 300 cases occur annually in the United States.
